How to Participate

This Project can only become a reality with your participation and support.

You can participate by:

1. Planting a Tree in your Local Community

2. Adopting a Tree to be Planted in Chile

3. Organise an Eco-Support Group (EcoSG)

Planting a Tree in your Local Community: You are invited to plant a Tree in your local area for one of the desaparecidos ("disappeared") or ejecutados-politicos ("political-executed") of Chile. This can be carried out anywhere in the world and will form part of the living memorial, in the form of a "virtual forest", across the planet. We will help you with the general coordination and planning, as well as putting you in contact with local individuals or groups that may like to help you or participate in the actual day. Here are a few pointers that may be helpful to keep in mind before starting the whole process:

(i) The tree should be planted in a public area, so that individuals and local communities can have access to it, e.g. Parks, Common land, Squares, Workplace forecourts, community spaces, public gardens, green areas in Schools and Universities.

(ii) Any type of tree can be planted, but we would like to suggest that it should be suited to the surroundings e.g. a native tree. You can always contact your local council or environmental group to get an idea as to the best tree to plant in your area.

(iii) Each tree should have a commemoration PLAQUE, which will carry the name of the person in whose memory the tree is planted and the name of the Project e.g.:

(iv) Once the Tree has been planted, please send us as much details of the ceremony and place as possible, including photos of the tree, location and species of tree. This will be added to the Forest Map in the ecomemoria Web page.

Finally, remember to contact the local authorities before planting the tree, as well as the local community and Press to publicise the event.

Suggestions for Participating Groups or Individuals:

(i) Individuals and Families: You can help by planting a tree in your local community in memory of one of the victims of the military dictatorship. The name of the victim can be a relative or someone that you knew, or simply for any of the victims. Of course you can plant more than one tree. A full list of the desaparecido ("disappeared") and ejecutados-politicos ("political-executed") can be found in www.memoriaviva.com.

(ii) Work Place: Simply take the form below and organised people in your work place to plant a tree. We will give you the necessary background information to explain the aims of the Project

(iii) Schools and Universities: As part of the Project we want to get school children involved. A way of doing this is to get schools to plant trees. You can set up projects with school children, which will help them understand the importance of human rights and ecological concerns. Remember that there were over 150 children amongst the victims of the military dictatorship.

(iv) Trade Unions: Many of the victims belonged to different trade-unions in Chile. Planting trees on behalf of these victims will be a powerful message to those that have for so many years tried to dismantle the Trade Union movement around the world.

(v) Professional Bodies: Many Professional Associations in Chile have put legal proceeding against human right violators. If you are a teacher, doctor, scientist, student o member of any professional body, you can get their members to plant trees on behalf of their Association.

(vi) Ethnic Groups: A significant number of the victims correspond to members of the smaller ethnic groups in Chile. We would like to have members of as many ethnic groups as possible, from around the world, to plant trees for the victims.

(vii) Football Clubs and Sport Associations: Many of the victims of the military dictatorship participated regularly in sport (especially football). You can get your football team and other sports to plant trees for one of the victims

(viii) Artist and Writers: Artist and writers were one of the groups, including trade union members, that were most severely persecuted by the dictatorship. If you are an artist or know any artists involved in human right and ecological campaigns, you could help to plant a tree for the many artists that were murder and made to disappear by the dictatorship.

Adopting a Tree to be Planted in Chile: As well as planting trees in your local community we invite you to adopt trees that will be planted in Chile. These will form part of the forest that will make up the “living memorial” for the victims of the military dictatorship. The process of adoption is open to all those interested in maintaining alive the memory of the victims of the military dictatorship. By simply contacting us directly or printing-out and filling in the attached form (see below) you can adopt one or more trees.

At present it is estimated that the cost of each tree will be around $20 (USA), which will include the actual cost of the tree, the planting and maintenance of the forest. All money collected for the ecomemoria PROJECT will be used exclusively for the cost of buying, planting and maintaining the trees.

Through the EcoSG you can get people and groups within your locality to plant trees in your local community and adopt trees to be planted in Chile as part of Ecomemoria Project.

Plantando un arbol en tu comunidad (es decir donde vives): Los invitamos a plantar un arbol en la localidad donde viven en nombre de uno de los desaparecidos o ejecutados politicos. Esto puede hacerse en cualquier lugar del mundo y formar parte de la memoria viva que toma la forma de un bosque virtual a lo largo del planeta.

Sera un gusto apoyarles con la coordinacion general y la planificacion de la actividad, como tambien lo ser ponerles en contacto con grupos locales o personas que estn dispuestos a ayudar o participar en el da de la plantacion. Les sera util considerar los siguientes aspectos antes de comenzar el proceso:

(i) El arbol ha de ser plantado en un area publica a modo que tanto las personas individuales como tambien los grupos tengan acceso al lugar. Por ejemplo: parques, plazas, acceso a lugares de trabajo, espacios comunitarios, jardines publicos, areas verdes tanto de colegios como de universidades.

(ii) Puede plantarse cualquier tipo de arbol, pero les sugerimos, preferentemente, que sea adecuado a las condiciones del entorno, por ejemplo: un arbol nativo del lugar. Para ello pueden contactar a la autoridad local o grupo ambiental en cuanto a cual es el arbol mas adecuado de plantar ahi.

(iii) Cada arbol debe tener una placa conmemorativa que llevar el nombre de la persona en cuyo nombre se planta el arbol y el nombre del proyecto. Por ejemplo:

(senalar si detenido-desaparecido o ejecutado-politico)

(iv) Una vez que el arbol haya sido plantado, manden nos toda la informacion que les sea posible tanto del lugar donde se realiza la plantacion como tambien de la ceremonia misma.

Por ultimo recuerden contactar a las autoridades locales antes de plantar el arbol, como tambien a la comunidad en general y a la prensa con el objeto que publiciten el evento.

Sugerencias para la participacion de individuos y grupos:
(i) Personas individuales y familias: Pueden ayudar plantando un arbol en su comunidad en memoria de alguna de las victimas de la dictadura militar. El nombre de la victima puede ser un pariente o algun conocido suyo, o simplemente una de las victimas. (ii) Lugares de trabajo: para esto le sugerimos que saque el formulario adjunto y
organice a sus colegas para que planten un arbol. Le podemos facilitar toda la informacion que les sea necesaria a modo de explicar el objetivo del proyecto.

(iii) Recintos educacionales y universidades: Como parte del proyecto queremos involucrar a escolares en este proyecto. Un modo de hacerlo es comprometiendo a los colegios en la plantacion de arboles. Pueden organizar un proyecto con escolares, lo cual les ayudar a comprender la importancia de los derechos humanos y la sensibilizarn por el medio ambiente. Recuerde que hubo 150 menores de edad entre las victimas de la dictadura militar.

(iv) Sindicatos. Muchas de las victimas pertenescan a distintos sindicatos en Chile. Plantar arboles en memoria de estas personas sera un mensaje poderoso para aquellos que han tratado por tantos años desmantelar el movimiento sindical alrededor del mundo.

(v) Colegios profesionales: Muchas asociaciones profesionales en Chile han hecho demandas en contra de quienes violaron los derechos humanos de sus asociados. Si eres profesor, medico, cientifico, estudiante o miembro de cualquier colegio profesional, puedes motivar a sus miembros a plantar arboles en nombre de tu asociacion.

(vi) Minoras etnicas: Un numero significativo de las victimas corresponde a miembros de las minoras etnicas de Chile. Nos gustara tener miembros de distintas comunidades etnicas comprometidas en la plantacion de arboles.

(vii) Equipos de futbol y clubes deportivos: Muchas de las victimas de la dictadura militar practicaban deportes habitualmente, en especial futbol. Pueden pedir a su club deportivo que plante un arbol en nombre de alguna de las victimas.

(viii) Artistas y escritores: Tanto artistas, escritores como tambien sindicalistas se encontraban entre los grupos mas perseguidos y amenazados por la dictadura. Si Ud. es artista o conoce artistas comprometidos con los derechos humanos o campanas por el medio ambiente, Ud. tiene la posibilidad de ayudar plantando un arbol en nombre de alguno de los muchos artistas que fueron asesinados o hechos desaparecer por parte de la dictadura militar.

Adoptando un arbol que ser plantado en Chile: Del mismo modo que les invitamos a plantar arboles en sus comunidades, les animamos a apadrinar arboles que seran plantados en Chile. Estos formaran parte de un bosque que constituir el memorial vivo de las victimas de la dictadura militar en Chile. El proceso de apadrinamiento est abierto a toda persona que quiera mantener vivo el interes por la memoria de las victimas de la dictadura militar. Puede apadrinar uno o mas arboles. Puede hacer esto con simplemente contactarnos o bien imprimiendo el formulario adjunto a continuacion.

Estimamos en estos momentos que el costo de cada arbol es del orden de los $ 20 USA. Este valor incluye el costo de cada arbol, la plantacion y la mantencion del bosque. Todo el dinero que sea recaudado por el Proyecto ECOMEMORIA ser destinado exclusivamente en comprar, plantar y mantener los arboles del bosque.
